Learn practical Spanish before moving to Spain
Before moving to Spain, prioritise the Spanish you will need to understand a question, describe a need and check a detail. Practise complete everyday exchanges alongside a progressive course, so you can adapt familiar language when a reply is different from the one you expected.
A phrasebook can help you ask the first question. Preparing for daily life also means learning how to listen to the answer, ask someone to slow down and confirm what you have understood.
Build a list of situations, not just words
Write down a few ordinary situations you expect to encounter: introducing yourself to a neighbour, asking where something is, buying food or agreeing a meeting time. For each, prepare an opening question, a likely answer and a follow-up.
Keep names, dates, quantities and contact details in a separate practice list. Being able to repeat a number or spell a name can make a familiar exchange easier, even when the rest of the conversation is new.
- Ask for a place or service and confirm the location.
- Describe what you need in a short sentence.
- Check a day, time, amount or spelling.
- Ask for repetition and say what you did understand.
Practise the unexpected reply
Change one detail each time you rehearse. A shop may have a different size; an appointment time may be unavailable; a neighbour may ask a question back. Practise a follow-up such as “¿Hay otra opción?” rather than memorising only a perfect first exchange.
Listen for the information that matters to the situation before trying to translate every word. Afterwards, review a short transcript and identify the words that carried the main meaning.

Combine practical exchanges with lessons at your current level. Understanding the pattern helps you change a phrase when the situation changes.
Is this a course for advanced Spanish?
The published course currently covers A0–B1. B2 is in development, while C1 and C2 are planned.
